Bukhara is the fifth-largest city in Uzbekistan and the capital of Bukhara Region. Founded not later than the 1st century CE, Bukhara was a major trade and crafts centre along the famous Silk Road. The historic centre of Bukhara was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. Bukhara is a place of particular significance because it was there that the founder of a major Sufi order, Bahauddin Naqshband, was born in 1318.
