1. University-Wide Required Foreign Language (English) Courses

ING 101: Offered to first-year students each fall semester. Develops general English proficiency at the A1–A2 level.

ING 102: Offered to first-year students each spring semester. Develops general English proficiency at the A2–B1 level. 

2. Integrated Skills:

This course is offered as part of the English Language Preparatory Program to students enrolled in programs in which 30% of instruction is provided in English and who do not pass the English Proficiency Exam (EPE). It develops general English proficiency at the B1–B2 level. 

1. University-Wide Required English Course Exemption Exam for First-Year Students Enrolled in Turkish-Medium Programs

The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions designed to assess general English proficiency at the B1 level and lasts 75 minutes.

Under Articles 19, 22, 24, 26, and 28 of the UHS Regulation on Associate and Undergraduate Education, students must earn a score of at least 60 on the exemption exam administered during the first week of each academic year to be exempt from the university-wide required English course. 

Appeals of exam results and requests to cancel a course exemption for the purpose of improving the course grade must be submitted in writing to the academic unit in which the student is enrolled within five business days after the results are announced on that unit’s website—that is, the website of the student’s college or school.

2. English Proficiency Exam (EPE) for Students Enrolled in Programs with 30% English-Medium Instruction or in International Programs 

The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions designed to assess general English proficiency at the B1–B2 level and lasts two hours. Students who earn a score of at least 65 are exempt from the English Language Preparatory Program and continue their studies in their academic departments. 

Students who do not pass the EPE are assigned to groups based on their EPE or Placement Test results.

Students who provide documentation of health-related, military service, financial, family, or educational circumstances, or who wish to improve their English independently, may be granted a one-time leave of absence for one academic year, provided that they submit a written request to the Department by the end of the course registration and renewal week. 4. Under the UHS Directive on Education, Instruction, and Examinations in Foreign Language and Turkish Preparatory Programs, approved by Senate Decision No. 23-07 on July 3, 2018, students must meet the following requirements to successfully complete the English Language Preparatory Program: 1- Satisfy the attendance requirement; and 2- Either earn a coursework grade of at least 80 out of 100, in which case the student is considered successful without taking the final exam, or earn a combined score of at least 65, calculated as 40% of the coursework grade and 60% of the final exam grade. Click here for information about the grading and examination system and the attendance limit for the English Language Preparatory Program during the 2018–2019 academic year.
5. The University-Wide Required English Course Exemption Exam for ENG 101 and ENG 102, originally scheduled for September 27, 2018, for students enrolled in Turkish-medium programs, has been postponed due to additional student placements. The new exam date will be announced soon.

Under the Department Board decision dated November 13, 2018, the new midterm exam for the English Language Preparatory Program has been scheduled for Thursday, December 6, 2018, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. The date was changed because of additional student placements and the second opportunity to take the EPE. This announcement was posted on the Department website on November 16, 2018.
