General Information
University of Health Sciences is the first state university established with a health-sciences theme in our country. The University of Health Sciences was established through Supplementary Article 158 added to the Law No. 2809 on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions on 27 March 2015, and the historic Mekteb-i Tıbbiyye-i Şâhâne building located in Haydarpaşa was allocated to the University. Following the heinous coup attempt that took place on 15 July 2016, Gülhane Military Academy of Medicine (GATA) was transferred to the University of Health Sciences, ensuring that military medical education continued without interruption. In order to train the qualified human resources needed by our country in the field of health sciences, new medical faculties affiliated with the University were established in the cities of İzmir, Bursa, Adana, Kayseri, Trabzon, and Erzurum, and educational activities commenced. The University has 19 faculties domestically, including 9 medical faculties (1 of which is international), 2 faculties of dentistry, 2 faculties of pharmacy, 2 faculties of health sciences, 1 faculty of life sciences, and 1 faculty of physiotherapy and rehabilitation; 3 schools, 2 of which are vocational schools of health services; and a total of 4 institutes in the provinces of İstanbul and Ankara, comprising 2 institutes of health sciences, 1 institute of defense health sciences, and 1 institute of athlete health and sports sciences.
The University of Health Sciences is authorized to establish programs offering education in foreign languages, with priority given to languages recognized as official languages by the United Nations, to conclude protocols for all forms of cooperation with higher education institutions abroad, including the conduct of joint programs with foreign higher education institutions, and to admit students from abroad to programs offering education in foreign languages. Active educational services are provided at academic units established in Bukhara and Tashkent in Uzbekistan, Mogadishu in Somalia, Nyala in Sudan, and Çobanbey in Syria; and the establishment work for new academic units planned to be opened in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in the Philippines, Samarkand in Uzbekistan, and Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina is ongoing. Our University continues its health practice and research activities through cooperation with hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Health, effectively implementing the utilization protocols concluded with these hospitals. Through the collaborations established with training and research hospitals, city hospitals, and advanced specialty hospitals, these institutions attain the status of health practice and research centers of our University. In line with the protocols concluded between Gülhane Dentistry Health Practice and Research Center and the Ministry of Health, affiliation has been established with a total of 65 health practice and research centers, 2 of which are abroad. At these centers, specialty training is provided in the fields of medicine and dentistry, and public health services are also delivered.
The University of Health Sciences has the objective of ranking among the top positions among universities providing health education at the international level. The needs of the health sector, which is among the priority sectors in development objectives, are addressed through R&D projects supported by national and international organizations or conducted in collaboration with industry, carried out by the R&D units located in İstanbul and Ankara.
